Carl Sandburg College’s women’s basketball, volleyball and softball teams have earned NJCAA Academic Team Award honorable mention in recognition of their outstanding work in the classroom during the 2017-18 academic year.

Teams needed at least a 3.0 overall grade point average to be eligible for the honor. Teams with the highest GPA in each sport were named an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year, with other qualifying teams earning honorable mention.

Sandburg’s women’s basketball team posted a 3.21 cumulative GPA, the highest of any Chargers squad. Five of the team’s 11 players had at least a 3.0 GPA to earn Academic All-Arrowhead Conference honors. Additionally, Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) and Juliette Camara (London Mills, Ill./Spoon River Valley) received NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards.

On top of making its first NJCAA Division II Championship appearance last season, the Chargers volleyball team recorded a 3.16 team GPA and had 12 of their 16 members earn Academic All-Arrowhead honors. Five Sandburg spikers — Mayberry, Helena Wyant (Toulon, Ill./Stark County), Camerin Huizenga (Fulton, Ill./Fulton), Josalyn Owens (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln) and Aleksa Ladd (Minonk, Ill./Fieldcrest) — also received NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards.

Sandburg’s softball team posted a 3.13 GPA while having a department-high 13 of its 17 players earn Academic All-Arrowhead recognition. Coach Todd Winkler’s team also had five players — Mayberry, Wyant, Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central), Jada Fletcher (Oquawka, Ill./West Central) and Sarah Lindsay (Athens, Ill./Athens) — receive NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards.
